No matter where you look—TV, internet, newspapers,
magazines—the current classic car market is flooded with restored,
refurbished, rebuilt and reworked cars. It
is getting harder and harder to find original cars, especially ones in any kind
of shape at all. That is why it is
so refreshing to have a car such as this 1972 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale hardtop
coupe to enter into the classic car market.
The car was bought new from the local Olds dealership, just a few blocks
from our current location, was serviced there at DeWitt Olds at least until 1985
when the car retired to the garage. In
addition to the original window sticker (total price $5493.25) and owner’s
manuals, there is an oil change sticker from DeWitt Olds, dated 12/17/1985
showing mileage of 14744 (current odometer reading is 14859).
Well…and there is also an S&H Green Stamp (remember those?) in the
car but that has little or nothing to do with the car itself. The base model Delta 88 Royale included some standard equipment that was optional on other models: custom sport front seats, power with front disc brakes, turbo hydra-matic transmission and vari-ration power steering. This particular Royale was further equipped with deluxe front and rear lap and front shoulder interlock seat belts, Soft-Ray tinted windows, power trunk lid latch, chrome door edge guards, vinyl roof, Four Season air conditioning, remote driver’s mirror, Expressway (2.73 to 1) axle ratio, Rocket 455 V8 with 4 barrel carb, Super Stock I wheels, electric clock, push button am/fm radio, windshield washer/wipers and the “Convenience” group (visor vanity mirror, luggage compartment lamp and underhood lamp. The color is Baroque gold with white vinyl top, the seats are cloth covered (is the color called "parchment" or "champagne"?) and in excellent, excellent shape! There is very little evidence that the car has actually been driven or ridden by looking at the interior. But 14,000 miles doesn't show up on the odometer all by itself and the exterior will give it away. General condition of the exterior can be described as excellent or fine but there are a few indicators of being out on the roads--a few chips in the paint, a light scrape on the LF bumper where someone ever-so-slightly miscalculated distance. All in all it is an exceptional car--condition, looks, interior, ride, drive...all of it!
